En 1917, el peso corporal promedio de las vacas Holstein en un establo lechero de Wisconsin, era de 556 kg, seg\u00fan demuestran los registros documentados por investigadores de la Universidad de Nebraska. Actualmente, el <strong>peso promedio<\/strong> de las vacas est\u00e1 cerca de los 680 kg y algunos ejemplares lo superan bastante.<\/p>\n<p>La producci\u00f3n de leche para aquellas vacas del a\u00f1o 1917, promediaba 6,673 kg. Mientras que actualmente, en los establos bien manejados, el hato alcanza un promedio de producci\u00f3n de 16,330 kg. Entonces, mientras que el peso corporal se ha elevado en un 22,4%, la producci\u00f3n de leche ha saltado \u00a1hasta en un 146%! Estos grandes vol\u00famenes de leche requieren una mayor absorci\u00f3n de nutrientes, y las vacas lo consiguen mediante una mejor selecci\u00f3n de alimento, mayor ingesti\u00f3n y mejor digestibilidad.<\/p>\n<p>En los <strong>sistemas de producci\u00f3n en confinamiento<\/strong>, la selecci\u00f3n de alimento es limitada, con una absorci\u00f3n de nutrientes determinada por la digestibilidad de nutrientes que pueden lograr nutricionistas y pastureros, antes de que ocurran trastornos digestivos.
