Sweet lupins: A practical protein alternative for dairy cows | Dellait

As protein costs rise and soybean meal markets remain volatile, sweet lupins are re-emerging as a practical complementary protein source for dairy herds.

Protein supplementation remains one of the largest variable costs in dairy nutrition. For decades, soybean meal has been an irreplaceable plant protein source because of its high crude protein concentration, favorable amino acid profile, and consistency. Yet in many regions, soybean meal has become increasingly expensive and volatile due to freight costs, currency fluctuations, and global market disruptions. This has renewed interest in alternative protein sources, and among them, sweet lupins are gaining attention.

Lupins (Lupinus spp.) are legumes cultivated for centuries, particularly in Mediterranean regions and more recently in Australia, now the world’s largest producer. Nutritionally, lupins are attractive because they contain between 28 and 42% crude protein depending on species and processing, along with 5 to 12% oil and highly digestible fiber, while remaining low in starch. This combination makes them particularly suitable for ruminants, offering both protein and energy while complementing forage-based diets.

Historically, however, lupins had one major limitation. Traditional “bitter” varieties contained high concentrations of quinolizidine alkaloids, natural defense compounds that reduced palatability and could cause toxicity when fed at high levels. Modern breeding has solved this problem. Today’s “sweet” lupins are specifically selected for low alkaloid concentrations, making them far safer and more practical for livestock feeding. This distinction is important because much of the hesitation around lupins still reflects concerns tied to older varieties rather than the sweet cultivars now available.

The renewed interest in lupins is driven by economics. In many dairy systems, imported soybean meal represents both a nutritional asset and an economic vulnerability. Lupins offer producers an opportunity to diversify protein supply, reduce dependence on imported feeds, and in some cases source protein closer to the farm. Beyond feed value, they also contribute agronomically by fixing nitrogen and fitting well into crop rotations, adding value at the field level.

Nutritionally, lupins are best viewed as a complementary protein source rather than a direct soybean meal replacement. Their protein is highly degradable in the rumen, making them excellent suppliers of rumen degradable protein (RDP) to support microbial growth and fiber digestion. However, this same characteristic limits their bypass protein contribution. Compared with soybean meal or canola meal, less lupin protein escapes the rumen for absorption in the small intestine, and lupins are low in methionine, which can become limiting in high-producing cows.

What does current research show?

Research has helped define where sweet lupins fit in modern dairy diets. One of the most relevant studies is that of Nanas et al. (2023), who evaluated sweet lupin seeds in transition cow diets. Because transition cows are among the most metabolically challenged animals in the herd, this provided an important test of whether lupins could perform under demanding nutritional conditions. The results were encouraging. Cows fed sweet lupins maintained milk production and milk composition comparable to controls, while reproductive performance and blood metabolites remained unaffected. This demonstrated that sweet lupins could successfully replace part of conventional protein sources without compromising production, fertility, or metabolic health.

Food safety has also been examined. Engel et al. (2022) fed dairy cows 1 and 2 kg/day of sweet blue lupins (Lupinus angustifolius) and measured alkaloid transfer into milk. Their findings showed that only exceedingly small fractions of these compounds appeared in milk, providing reassurance that certified sweet lupin varieties pose minimal risk for milk quality.

The practical limits of lupin inclusion were explored by Joch and Kudrna (2020), who replaced 30 and 50% of soybean meal with white sweet lupins. At the 30% replacement level, milk yield was maintained, but at 50% milk production declined by approximately 1 kg/day. This reinforces an important practical point: moderate inclusion works well, but overreliance can reduce metabolizable protein supply.

Processing can improve their value. Mendowski et al. (2019) showed that extrusion reduced ruminal protein degradation and improved nitrogen utilization, making lupins more competitive in higher-producing diets.

So where do sweet lupins fit?

For most dairy herds, they are best used as a partial replacement for soybean meal or canola meal.

Practical inclusion guidelines are:

  • Transition cows: 1–2 kg/day
  • Early lactation: 1.5–3 kg/day
  • Mid to late lactation: 2–4 kg/day

These rates provide useful rumen degradable protein while allowing the diet to be balanced for bypass protein and amino acids. Pairing lupins with canola meal, heat-treated soybean meal, or rumen-protected methionine can improve overall protein balance. As shown in Table 1, lupins offer a unique combination of high rumen degradable protein and oil, making them well suited as complementary protein sources rather than direct replacements for soybean meal. Their strengths and limitations highlight the importance of balancing them strategically within the ration.

Lupin feeding economics

Economically, lupins should not be compared simply on crude protein percentage or price per ton. The better comparison is cost per kilogram of usable protein. As a practical rule, lupins become highly competitive when priced at 70–80% of soybean meal on a protein-equivalent basis, especially when locally available.

Sourcing depends on region. Australia remains the dominant supplier, while Europe has growing production in Germany, France, Spain, and Poland. In the United States, availability remains more limited and often depends on specialty pulse brokers. In the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia, supply is tied to Australian exports.

Sweet lupins will not replace soybean meal in every dairy ration, nor should they. Their value lies in flexibility. Used strategically, they can lower feed costs, diversify protein supply, and improve regional feed security. Like many feed ingredients, their value is not determined by what they lack, but by how strategically they are used.
